Hello everyone (anyone). At the top of each page is a little music player that has my newest work in progress for you to listen to. For this month it’s a track I called ‘World On Repeat’ – which is meant to imply that we all do the same things everyday, looping over and over…

Anyway, if you would like to leave me some comments or suggestions, or any feedback at all, please do so below this post. It’s really useful to me, and also gives everyone a chance to influence the next track. A kind of musical experiment.

In a city of millions of people, we come on here – on the internet – to talk to each other, to say what we really mean and let out our private thoughts. For all we know, we might be communicating through the internet with the people who sit next to us in the office, with people who sleep 8 feet above us, in the flat one floor up – people we probably never talk to in ‘real’ life…

Were people this lonely before the internet? Because that is what we are: lonely. Why else are we on here? We cram ourselves into tube trains, our faces under another’s armpits, but we don’t say anything to them. We barely smile. And yet we post our blogs, our emails, our dating adverts, all hoping for a connection. In a day, we brush past other people, bump shoulders to get through a busy crowd, we collide in cars, we stand in packed elevators looking at the floor, we build ourselves into blocks of flats like bees in a hive, and despite this closeness, this proximity, how close do we feel to them? How close do you feel to anyone in this city?

Bars and clubs pretend to be somewhere where we can socialise and meet new people. But do we need to be drunk and unable to hear what the person next to us is saying, in order to get to know them? What does this say about us? Imagine what it might be like to learn about someone, and for both of you to become a part of each other’s lives without the mindless chit-chat, the endless alcohol and the false personas, dressed up the same day each week for the routine event of the “Friday night out” this nation so proudly celebrates.

How many of us are thinking, ‘there must be something more than this’? There must be something.

There is nothing here that hasn’t been said before, but it seems that we keep forgetting it. All the mundane and the trivial that we spoon-feed ourselves, whether it be the fantasy chemicals invented to sell you L’Oreal, or how we use sex to sell toothbrushes and car tyres – it’s throwing us off course. It’s white noise, blocking out what really matters.

Maybe it’s fair to say this doesn’t apply to everyone, but it does to me.

And yes, it is ironic. I am here because I seek a connection. I’m not ashamed of it. I’m not here just because “I thought I’d give it a go” or “I thought I’d try something new”. I’m here because the people I walk past every day and the people who share my bee hive don’t get what I’m saying. Or maybe they’re scared of opening up, just like me. So I have to write it on here, where you can’t even see my email.

Here’s the first of some free tracks for download – this one was written for a magazine called Freeze. Freeze interviewed the record label Fluid Audio and put out a mix. This was one of the tracks on that mix.
